The Travel 1003 from Torqeedo was released in 2010 along with the Travel 503. These two electric outboards are the first fully submersible electric outboards with integrated battery and two year warranty.
Torqeedo's Travel 1003 is a 3.0 HP (propulsive power) or 4.0 HP (thrust) outboard which is perfect for any dinghy, RIB or day-sailer. Using an inflatable-dinghy, sailboat or daysailer weighing up to 1.5 tons and travelling at a speed of 1.5 - 2 knots you could expect to get 15.0 - 20.0 nautical miles (10 hours and 30 minutes) on a single charge! Using the same vessel but travelling at full speed (4.5 - 5.0 knots) you can expect to travel 2.5 - 2.8 nautical miles in about 35 minutes.
The outboard's efficiency is record breaking with a drivetrain for superior power and range with an overall efficiency of over 48%!
Originally, the Travel 1003 was supplied with a 400Wh Lithium-maganese battery but was later superseded by a more powerful (30%), 520Wh Lithium-ion battery. The integrated battery is fully waterproof (IP67) which makes it perfect for use at sea where waves can be unpredictable.
GPS Receiver
The Travel 1003 has a GPS receiver inside the battery housing to give accurate measurements. You will be able to see the current land speed in km/h or mph, battery charge status, remaining range and the current input power. By using less power you will travel at slower speed but the total distance travelled will increase. See the calculations below.
Charging
The 1003 is very convenient when it comes to re-charging the battery. You can use the 45W Solar Charger to charge the battery even whilst using it! Alternatively, you can use the supplied 1918-00 battery charger. The battery itself weighs 9.9lbs (4.5kg) which makes it easy to remove from the outboard and take home or to the workshop for charging.
Charge cycles are not the main factor affecting the service life of the lithium battery. The battery does not have a memory-effect. Generally, a loss of capacity of 4% per year can be assumed. Ageing is accelerated if the battery is exposed to high temperatures for long periods and if it is stored fully charged for long periods. Therefore, the battery can be used in very hot conditions, but should be removed from the sun and stored in a cool place when it is not used. If it is stored for a longer period of time, it's charge status should be about 50%. If these conditions are followed, your battery will have a life expectancy for some 6 - 10 years.
